President's Message

Greetings Fellow SEW IFMA Members,

With few exceptions, the last time I’ve seen many of you in person was our February presentation and tour at Mortenson’s new office.  With all the virtual meetings happening these day’s I can’t wait to see you all in person soon!  Time has flown by with too many changes and pivots to recall.  At the onset of the pandemic, we held virtual roundtable meetings to discuss the changing facility landscape and supply chain issues.  Everyone was very interactive during these Zoom calls which was great to see the energy flowing.  Hopefully these discussions provided you the resources needed and offered the chance to connect with fellow professionals.  With a few virtual programs thrown in, we still provided that connection, albeit nowhere near the comradery typical at our events.

So, it’s with great pleasure, I am able to promote the early fall in-person schedule-socially distanced and with safety in mind of course!

We start with our Annual Dinner at New Berlin Banquet Center-September 1st.  Our annual sponsorship team rallied together and achieved yet another strong sponsorship drive.  We look forward to celebrating with our sponsors and members at this annual tradition. (Yes, it’s a little later this year).

Later in the month, we have The Ken Laga Memorial Golf Outing at Western Lakes in Pewaukee-September 23rd.  (Also a bit later this year) Golf outings seem to be the hot ticket this summer and the SEW IFMA outing is no exception!  Sponsorships and foursomes are still available, though filling up surprisingly quickly-so sign up soon!

I truly can’t wait to see everyone in person and look forward to steering the SEW IFMA ship through another year as your President with the support of our members and sponsors.

Take Care,

Brett Heikkila

Ken Laga, the namesake for the annual chapter golf outing, was a terrific friend, colleague and leader to all who knew him. Ken was one of the original members of our local chapter and was very dedicated to the organization and the facility management field. Student Scholarship

Scholarship Committee News

By Scholarship Committee Chair: Doug VerBockel

There is good news from our SEW IFMA chapter!  We will be giving away two college student scholarships this year.  The money for both scholarships was created from profits at our past annual IFMA Ken Laga Scholarship golf outings.  Each scholarship is awarded to a deserving college student in a Facility Management related degree program.

Local Wisconsin Student $3,000 Scholarship:

This scholarship was awarded to Catherine Starosta, a Junior in Interior Design at Mount Mary University.  In a recommendation letter, Catherine was described as a ‘rare gem’ student that possesses a wonderful work ethic, plenty of ambition, and a passion to learn.  Catherine was on the Dean’s list at Mount Mary in 2018 and 2019, is current History Club President, and is student Chapter ASID Treasurer.  Catherine was also a National Honor Society Member with a volunteerism award for over 300 volunteer hours.   She has a Degree of Special Distinction in National Speech and Debate and was Forensics team Captain. Catherine is expected to attend our IFMA Annual Meeting Dinner on September 1st.  Hope to see you all there.

2nd Scholarship is:

IFMA Foundation Ken Laga Memorial $3,500 Scholarship (National Award):

The winner of this award has not been chosen yet.  I (Doug VerBockel) am on the scholarship review committee with the Foundation and have rated numerous applicants. Multiple IFMA members review applicants, and the Foundation ranks them in order.  There are about 25 scholarships given from IFMA Foundation each year and our own Chapter Ken Laga scholarship is one of the 25 presented.  Once a winner is announced we will let you know.  The winner is also awarded a paid in full trip to IFMA World Workplace this year in Texas.

Annual Sponsorship Opportunities

The Southeast Wisconsin Chapter of the International Facility Management Association (IFMA), founded in 1987, is dedicated to supporting and helping meet the changing informational and educational needs of in-house corporate, government and health care facility management executives and their staff. These individuals are responsible for the planning, construction, and ongoing management of millions of square feet of facilities throughout southeastern Wisconsin and beyond.

We would like to continue to offer valuable educational opportunities for our members while supporting our local communities and could use your help in becoming a sponsor of SEW IFMA or continuing your sponsorship of SEW IFMA.

The benefits of becoming sponsor of SEW IFMA are the following:

  • Direct advertising and recognition to over 200 local facilities professionals.
  • Receive unique and valuable marketing opportunities for your company.
  • Networking with our local Chapter including two additional state Chapters.
  • Stay ahead of the competition by being in our exclusive company online directory.
  • Access for you and your team to take part in our premier educational activities.

More specifically and most importantly, your contributions will help us develop and provide top rated educational programs, premier facility access events, and exceptional networking opportunities.  Here is a sample of some of the educational programs and tours we have planned for the first half of the year.

Facility Programs and Tours:

  • WeHub: Workspace Nudge - January 15
  • FM Roundtable:  VJS - January 23
  • Tour of Mortenson - February 12
  • Milwaukee Rescue Mission - February 27
  • Beer & Wine Tasting - March 2020
  • Tri Chapter: Harley Davidson Museum - April 28
  • Brewers Game - May 2020
  • Annual Dinner - June 2020

Our Chapter Mission is to promote and elevate the facilities management profession both in the FM industry as well as in our local communities.  With your help and support, we intend to do just that, deliver exceptional value for you and to each of the facilities professionals in our chapter.  I encourage you to consider becoming a 2019/2020 Chapter Sponsor to help us continue this growing momentum.   Please join us at www.sewifma.org to register.

It’s a great time to be part of our chapter, and to highlight your company as a Sponsor.

Thank you,

Amy Langkamp, Chapter Vice President
