President's Message

Greetings,

What an exciting time for our Chapter with having the opportunity to host the 2017 Tri Chapter Symposium.  We had over 100 attendees this year and a rich blend of nationally known and local speakers all having a little different take on Bridging the Multigenerational Gap.  I hope for all those that had chance to attend you found the day to be very engaging and insightful.  Thank you for taking a day out of your busy schedules to be with us.

A very Big “shout out” goes to the Planning Committee members from each of our Chapters, our volunteers, and our Sponsors that helped make the day so impactful.   I would also like to recognize our very own Matt Tadisch and the team at MSOE and the Grohmann Museum who helped make the day special by opening up the campus for us to enjoy.  They were able to help provide each of us a unique experience that we will remember for a very long time.  Thankyou!

For those that did not have a chance to attend please reach out with one of us who did and we would be happy to share the experience.  We will also be posting all of the slide decks and conference notes on the website shortly for you to refer back to.

Tri Chapter is one of the rare opportunities that comes around once each year where we can all come together to share our experiences so all can benefit.  One of the key topics that stood out for me was at the round table discussion in the first morning breakout we had at tri chapter, a group of 30 or so people gathered together to talk about Succession Planning.  Along the lines of Bridging the Multigenerational Gap, succession planning is going to become a pretty significant issue for all of us in the industry.  Whether you are an Associate Member, Professional Member, or Sponsor.  Whether you are an entrepreneur of a small company or work for a large company there is set to be a large number of retirees in the next 3 to 5 years.  This is an issue that will have impacts on us as FM’s and our industry for years to come.  So….what can we do now to help us transition?

We had a very engaging discussion about this and here are some of the items I took away:

  • Recognize early that this is something we must begin planning for now.
  • Make it safe for those who need to transition to share their knowledge.
  • Consider Mentoring/Shadowing those that are new to the industry and to your organization.
  • Talk with the “C” Suite about these issues and help them recognize how significant it is.
  • Use of electronic tools to help documents the knowledge – this takes time, start now
  • Look to your local technical colleges to help start your own apprenticeship for both building industry skills and knowledge as well as knowledge of your specific facility while going to school.
  • Working with IFMA and local chapter to help build a pool of candidates to draw from as retirements happen people who already know our industry.
  • Consider hiring the retirees back “part time” through your local Temporary Help Programs.  This allows more time to transition to help transfer knowledge to other employees or other members on your team.

There were many more items we will post on the website shortly.

One of the most valuable portions of the day for me was when we all got to interact and have the dialog such as the discussion I highlight above.  I came to find out that I am not the only one with this issue and there are others who are further down the path.  Having heard these ideas will at least give me and others a good place from which to start when it comes to planning for this.

I hope you were able to experience the same type of value that I have from this event.

Thank you again to our Planning Committee, our Volunteers, and our Sponsors for making this a GREAT Day.

All the best!

Scott
